Rastan is Conquering the Amiga 500! A Legendary Retrogame Reborn

If you spent any time in the dim, neon-lit arcades of the late '80s, you definitely remember the thunderous, sword-swinging adrenaline rush of Taito’s 1987 masterpiece, Rastan. It was, without a doubt, one of the absolute best fantasy action-platformers of its era, capturing our imaginations with its brutal combat and epic landscapes.

For years, many of us dreamed of a perfect arcade-to-home conversion that truly captured the raw, heavy-metal essence of the original game on our favorite home computers. Now, decades later, the incredible amiga homebrew scene is doing what major studios once deemed impossible. Rastan is being actively converted to the Commodore Amiga, and the early results are looking jaw-droppingly gorgeous.

Breathing New Life into a Classic

This isn't just a lazy emulated port; it's a passionate, bottom-up reimagining of a beloved retrogame. The project features beautifully reworked sprites that carefully honor the arcade original, paired with brand new, stunningly re-imagined backgrounds that give the dark fantasy world a breathtaking fresh depth.

But here is the absolute kicker that will make any classic hardware enthusiast smile: the entire game is optimized to run flawlessly on a stock Amiga 500 with just 512kb of extra RAM. Seeing modern coding techniques push our beloved childhood machine to its absolute limits is exactly why I adore the homebrew community today.

System Requirements

Whether you are running original hardware or booting up an emulator, here is what you will need to jump into the action:

  • Floppy Version: 512kb Chip RAM + 512kb other RAM (Standard Amiga 500 setup)

  • HD Version: 1.0 MB Chip RAM + 512kb other RAM (Amiga 500+ and above)

The Heroes Behind the Code

A phenomenal effort like this requires an incredible amount of dedication. This labor of love is being brought to life by a talented team of indie creators who are giving us the Amiga version we always deserved. Here are the geniuses behind the curtain:

  • Graphics & Code: basementApe

  • Music (Field): JMD, Tsak & basementApe
