DECLINE: Investigate a Teacher's Murder and Deal With the Effects of Old Age in this Mystery Game
Updated: Jun 3, 2022
Decline is a short indie third-person 2D adventure game that was produced by Ben Jelter for the Game Boy Showdown, a Game Boy-focused game jam under the theme "Weather", and published on May 29th of this year, being available on itch.io platform. In Decline, you play Gail, a detective who is practically one step away from forced retirement due to age. You are called by your boss to investigate a murder of a teacher at the school where you spent your childhood, as well as dealing with the effects and bitterness of your old age.
Ben Jelter is already a well-known developer here on the channel: he created, a while ago, a really cool mystery game called Opossum Country. We can say that he is very specialized in developing games in the Game Boy Color style, with a very neat 2D 8-bit look, and that's what we see in Decline. As for the gameplay, Decline is an adventure with elements of a visual novel: the game has a considerable narrative load, where the only interactions you have is exploring the locations and talking to people. During conversations, you choose between some alternatives, and the answers vary depending on the choices you make, even leading to different endings.
If you like Game Boy or Game Boy Color games, it's worth checking out Decline's gameplay, which is on our channel. If you're interested, you can download Decline from the itch.io page. The respective links can be accessed below.
